He worked mainly with oranges, greens, yellows, reds, and blues. They worked on 20 productions together including but not limited to: Tristan and Isolde, Iphigénie en Aulide by Christoph Willibald Gluck, Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart, and Fidelio by Beethoven.Īlfred Roller’s work could be described as eclectic, organic, and psychedelic. Roller met Gustav Mahler, a German romantic composer in 1902 and eventually wanted to become a part of designing the stages that Mahler and other composers’ work would be performed on. Later on in his career, he began working in set design for operas and plays at the Vienna State Opera. His influence has transcended even further into time as the modern era of art looks to the early 1900s and 1970s for inspiration, with Nick Curtis creating a typeface called Versacrum NF inspired by Roller’s handwritten type in the Ver Sacrum periodical in 2015. This period took Alfred Roller’s organic, groovy type and images and gave them new life. Speaking of influences, his work became a huge influence on the Psychedelic movement of the 1960s, which was a revived form of Art Nouveau. These covers were psychedelic and wild and influenced his later artwork. One of his most notable ongoing projects was his designs for Ver Sacrum, a Secessionist journal. He is a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement and strived to create psychedelic, creative art following his art education at the academy, which severely underwhelmed him. This lead him to a career in theater set design after the Secession dissolved. He was elected as the president in 1902 and created many posters for the Secession’s exhibitions and was successful in doing so. The movement was all about anti-academia in the art world and was part of a larger Secessionist movement that spanned Munich and Berlin. The Vienna Secession was an art movement in association with Art Nouveau and garnered a lot of support among popular artists at the time like Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Joseph Maria Olbrich. He was also a member of and co-founded the Vienna Secession.
